Research

Sensor Autonomy for sub-gram flying robots

  • Designed and fabricated a 100 mg flex circuit board comprising an nRF52840 SoC, a 6-axis IMU, laser rangefinder and global shutter imaging sensors
  • Developed the firmware in C for tight sensor synchronization, signal processing and low-latency wireless data transmission at 1 kHz with microseconds level precision
  • Implemented a multi-rate Extended Kalman Filter for online real-time state estimation for closed-loop attitude, altitude and lateral velocity control in flight
  • Developed a fast and efficient customized optical flow algorithm based on the Lucas-Kanade method achieving 8 rad/s measurement range at 100 Hz

Lightweight and compact sensing backpacks for birds and insects (collaborations with UW Biology and Georgia Tech)

  • Designed and fabricated a 300 mg device comprising nRF52832 SoC, a 6-axis IMU, barometer, and a battery
  • Features remote triggering for real-time data streaming at 1 kHz over bluetooth low energy notification characteristic

Smart shin guards for axial and proximal tibial accelerometry (collaboration with UW Rehabilitation Medicine)

  • Designed and fabricated a 1 g circuit embedding with two IMUs for shin guards for in-field data logging in soccer games
  • Ongoing work to implement K-nearest neighbors classifiers for kick and movement classification
